About the logo
This image was created based on my ideas on the topic which I transformed into pencil sketches. These sketches in resulted in suggestions and new ideas on the part of the organizers of the symposium. After making a few modifications they agreed on one sketch which was the model for a letter size black and white linoleum print. The finished print was then modified, using a computer, by eliminating certain elements and adding colour so that it would function as a logo on much smaller scale than the original print. I chose to model the face in the image on an Olmec head because we were looking for something related to the State of Veracruz. I didn´t choose it because it has any specific relation to worms but now some ideas have occurred to me. Archaeological remains like worms remain hidden underground for a long time. The colossal Olmec heads were unearthed as worms are, for subsequent study. Both are a familiar part of the environment but remain mysterious to most of us. The worms of different colours dancing together in the head, which has the shape of a pot, are symbolic. They represent the meeting of people and ideas from different countries. The two corn motifs represent the importance function that worms fulfill in soil regeneration and the resulting growth of plants. The final result is very stylized because I didn´t want the image to copy the Olmec head too overtly. The facial expression is less severe and the whole image appears to be in motion. I wanted to create an image that did more than a logo by provoking thought and celebrating an important occasion.
